Plan the right place and time

How to book a tattoo at a convention

A convention can bring visiting artists together in one place. Before you plan around a tattoo appointment, confirm the artist, the event and the booking arrangements separately.

Start with confirmed attendance

Use the organizer's current artist list and the artist's own announcement. An old event post or a studio address does not confirm where someone will be working this time. Ask which days they plan to attend and whether they are taking requests for that event.

Use the artist's booking instructions

Follow the contact method the artist names. Mention the convention and the day you hope to attend so your request is not confused with a regular studio appointment. Explain the idea, approximate size and placement, and ask whether it suits the work they want to take on at the show.

A short opening message could be: “I saw your announcement for [event]. Are you taking requests for [day]? I'm interested in [idea], approximately [size] on [placement]. What is your preferred process for discussing it?”

Confirm these details before you travel

  • The event name, venue and appointment day and time
  • Where to find the artist, including a booth number when available
  • The artist's confirmation, payment and change-of-plans instructions
  • The organizer's admission requirements for your visit

Keep the artist's confirmation and the event information somewhere you can find them on the day.

Check admission separately

A tattoo appointment and admission to the convention can be separate arrangements. Read the organizer's current ticket information rather than assuming the artist's booking includes entry. Ask the artist about their own pricing and payment process; event admission does not establish a tattoo price.

If you are hoping for a walk-up

Ask the artist about current availability at the event. An open booth or a past post about walk-ups is not a reservation. If you want a particular artist or project, contact them ahead of time using their instructions.
